Henry Patrick Stores
Founded 80 Years Ago
Milford Daily News
June 1, 1949 – In 1869, a young man of 23, Henry Patrick, founded a business which in the next 80 years was to become a tradition in the Hopedale community of Milford, which later became the town of Hopedale.
He was a farsighted man, usually ahead of his time in his methods and thinking. When he opened the Corner store, it was one of the first, if not the first “Cash and Carry Store” in New England. So it is in keeping with the traditions already a part of its community background and with modern methods which have come to be generally accepted that the Henry Patrick Co. has entered upon its present program.
Modernize Business
This program contemplates retaining all that is good of the old traditions and at the same time modernizing the interior and exterior of it’s stores and their surroundings, offering merchandise at competitive prices, and otherwise improving its service.
The company has separated the operations of the dry goods department and has installed it in the new “Patrician Room,” where high quality merchandise is on display at attractive prices. New meat, fish, fruit, and vegetable departments have been equipped with the latest in refrigeration and display cases where choice prepackaged meats, frozen delicacies and fresh fruits and vegetables are perfectly kept and attractively displayed.
To Remodel Exterior
The grocery department has been modernized and the goods are now displayed on modern shelves and gondolas which makes the customer’s choice of articles easy and shopping a pleasure.
Ample room within the store will permit of the old-time neighborly visiting that is so much a part of the Patrick tradition and large parking space has been provided for customer’s cars.
On June 16 the company will formally open its Main store as a “Cash and Carry Unit” retaining its credit and delivery services for those who care to avail themselves of them. However, that is not all, for as soon as possible the company intends to do over the outside of its stores and the grounds around them so that they will be in keeping with their surroundings.
Next month – Rico Calarese buys the Henry Patrick stores.
