James was living at the Dutcher Street apartment house in 1946, when he wrote the following. He was writing about the first Saturday he hadn’t worked since he left high school. It was the beginning of the 40-hour work week.
Supper at 6: oyster stew with crackers; green salad with mayonnaise (Hellman’s), coffee rolls (bakery), peanut brittle and chocolate peppermints. At 5:30 had listened to John W. Vandercook on WBZ on the Russian and Asiatic situation and the UNO. Studied the Sunday School lesson (Joshua entering the Promised Land), (James taught Sunday School at the Union Church.) read till 9 or more — and so to bed — completing my first, free Saturday since the gay ‘90s.

My front lawn has been covered with lots of maple seeds in the past week. If they all started growing, there would be about 100 trees per square foot.

On May 7, we paddled under the Charles River at the Mass Pike/128 interchange where a huge project is going on.
From the Milford Daily News – The roadwork is part of the Newton-Weston bridge replacement/rehabilitation at I-90/I-95 project that will update 8 bridges in the area. The work includes replacing 5 bridges, replacing the structure of 2 bridges, and rehabilitating one bridge. The DOT says the bridges are “currently safe but aging and deteriorating.”
Lower Beach, Hopkinton State Park. The pool is drained every winter. The picture, taken from the dam on May 8, shows it as it is being refilled.

We went back to Lake Cochituate again on Memorial Day, to paddle the other end of it, and I managed to get this heron taking off.
