Born in Boston, Massachusetts, she was raised in the Wellesley area of Boston, MA. She was the daughter of Lilla Joy Draper Scharnberg and Arthur Davidson Calfee of Boston, and granddaughter of the late Clare Hill Drapers of Boston, a grandniece of the late Princess Margaret Boncompagni and great granddaughter of General William F. Ms. Roberts (or Joy) was an amateur anthropologist and was always interested in the welfare of man. She considered herself a very lucky woman and insisted on “giving back”; she volunteered in every town she lived in. She also loved to travel and visited many countries around the world from 1985 until her death, including many countries in Europe and South America, Africa, Tonga, Mexico, Russia, and Egypt.

After working for many years in the Costa Mesa-Newport area, she moved to Calaveras County in 2002, to be closer to her daughter, Ann, and new grandson, Michael Thad Seely, and later, granddaughter, Elizabeth Joy. She truly enjoyed the small country town living of San Andreas. She loved all music and dancing and was secretary of the Valley Springs Calaveras Twirlers square dance club for many years. An avid reader, she joined the Mountain Ranch Book & Discussion Group, as well as Writers Unlimited in San Andreas and became Business Manager of the publishing arm, Manzanita Writers Press, and then an active Board member of the Manzanita Arts Emporium. She began volunteering at the Volunteer Center of Calaveras County in 2005 and became Assistant Director of the organization. She loved watching her two grandchildren grow during their school years at San Andreas Elementary and Calaveras High Schools.

Joy Roberts was a happy person and tried hard to make the world a better place. She believed that life was to be fun – if you had to do something, you might as well have fun doing it!

Joy is survived by her daughter, Ann Roberts Seely, and two grandchildren, Michael Thad Seely and Elizabeth Joy Seely, all of San Andreas. She was survived by her brother, Arthur Draper Calfee, of Falmouth, MA, seven nieces and nephews and several grand nieces and nephews.
