Notes from Dr. Campbell
A few months ago, I was given a collection of items that had belonged to Dr. Kleber Campbell by his great-grandson, Pete Phillips. Among the material from Pete was a notebook the doctor kept outlining how he had treated his patients. Dr. Campbell began his medical practice at his home and office at 82 Hopedale Street in 1900. Some of the penmanship makes reading difficult, and some items are unfamiliar. Bis G? Bis N? Different forms of bismuth, maybe. Brandy 10 gtt every hour. Anyway, here are a few of his notes. Maybe you can figure out more than I can. At the very least, it’s quite a look at what people were going to Dr. Campbell for, and what he thought would take care of their problems.
Sept 8 Mrs. B. For her boy who has Ringworm have given Sulphur ointment and he is doing well.
Sept 8 Lionel B. Temp 99 Pulse 96. Bis N every 3 hours. Bis G every 6 hours. 4 teaspoonfuls of malted milk in cup of water every 2 hours – Also at same time 3 teaspoonfuls of beef juice. And 3 times each day give one egg and a little scraped beef.
Sept 8 Mr. F. Loosened up baby’s foreskin.
Sept 8 Ora S. Temp 98.8. Injection gave gtt of opium in each dose of medicine.
Sept 8 Mrs. T Pd for ? Ordered castor oil and if couldn’t take that take2 gr. Calm. Bis G, 3 tabs every 4 hours tomorrow. Cu As 2 tabs in 2/3 glass of water.
Sept 8 Harold W. Age 3 yrs. Cold perspiration – Vomiting and bowels loose – gave ztes castor oil. Bis N every two hours. Brandy 10 gtt every hr
Sept 9 Ester W Pd. Bowels loose and green 1/6 Caln every hr till 4 tabs taken Bis N every 2 hours- Give malted milk.
Sept 9 Harold W Pulse 125 Loosened up adhesions of prepuce – Bis N every 2 hr Bis G at 10:15 AM and 2:15 PM. Eggwater
Sept Ora S. Injection Temp by Rectum 99.7gtt (in each dose of medicine)
Sept 9 Marnie G Temp 99.4 Pulse 108 Nux every hour – Gordinnier after meals.
Sept 9 Mr. C Pd Been feeling ? since Friday.Pulse 90 Temp 98.4. Bowels feel ? and vomited a little. Calin 5 gr opium. Listerine zt repeat in as 1 ½ hours – Bismuth G in 3 hours repeat every 4 hours NaHCO3 to put in milk.
Sept 9 Mrs S. Advice to her boy H who has adenoids.
Sept 9 Ora S – Evening – Temp 100 by rectum Injection & gtt of Opium
Sept 9 Harold W Evening – Temp 99.7 Bismuth
Sept 9 Marnie G – 5 PM Temp 100.4
Sept 9 John S Pd – Pain in bowels – not moved since Friday zt Castor oil Listerine ¼ Morphine
Sept 9 Mrs P Wart on back. Gave Carl Seiler for his catarrh. Calin & Bis G for Stomach
Sept 10 John S Pd Bowels not moved – ztss Castor oil ¼ Morphine – Nux every hr. At 7 AM At 11 Am Bowels had moved 4 times and he was feeling better – Gave Bis G.
Sept 10 – Mrs. W – Been raising gas all night – bowels not moved since Friday. Gave Castor oil and she vomited it gave more of it and she vomited it. Also vomited Listerine Gave 1/6 Caln every half hour – she only took 3 tabs for bowels moved – Bis G every 3 hours. Strych every 2 hours – Temp 99 Pulse 60. The above call made at 9AM at 11:45 Temp 98.2 Pulse 60
