The article below was written by Rev. Carlton A. Staples. Based on information on a Thomson family website, it appears that Staples wrote it in 1901. It shows the thinking of those times, saying that the settlers were doing God’s work when killing the natives. The last paragraph ends with “…massive, enduring character of the men and women who subdued the wilderness, conquered the savage, and laid the foundations of the town in the love of liberty and the service of God.
