
For many years, Linwood Lowell and family resided in the house at 11 Main Street.
11 MAIN STREET – ‘PUBLIC SAFETY HOUSE’ (MARLOW HOUSE)
BUILT IN 1905, THE MARLOW HOUSE HAS BEEN OCCUPIED BY MANY FAMILIES OVER THE YEARS WHO WERE INVOLVED IN FIRE SAFETY IN MENDON. IT IS LOCALLY KNOWN AS THE PUBLIC SAFETY HOUSE.
FOR MANY YEARS, LINWOOD LOWELL, SR. AND FAMILY RESIDED THERE. CHIEF LOWELL WAS BORN, RAISED AND EDUCATED IN MENDON, GRADUATING MENDON HIGH SCHOOL IN 1943. HE WAS EMPLOYED AT THE MASS. FIREFIGHTING ACADEMY IN STOW, RETIRING IN 1986 AFTER OVER 10 YEARS AS DEPUTY CHIEF. HE SERVED THE MENDON FIRE DEPARTMENT FOR OVER 30 YEARS; FOURTEEN AND A HALF OF THOSE AS CHIEF. CHIEF LOWELL DIED IN OCTOBER 2008 AND WAS LAID TO REST IN SWANDALE CEMETERY IN MENDON. MEMBERS OF THE LOWELL FAMILY HAVE CONTINUED TO SERVE ON THE MENDON FIRE DEPARTMENT.
THE CURRENT OCCUPANTS OF THE HOME ARE THE BUCCHINO FAMILY; MARK BUCCHINO HAVING SERVED ON THE POLICE DEPARTMENT, FIRE DEPARTMENT, AND CIVIL DEFENSE IN RECENT YEARS.
Linwood E. Lowell Sr., 82 of Mendon MA, retired Fire Chief for the Town of Mendon, died early Thursday morning (October 23, 2008) at the UMASS-Memorial Medical Center in Worcester MA after being stricken earlier in the week. He was the husband of Dorothy E. (Kennelly) Lowell.
Chief Lowell was born in Mendon MA, the son of the late Harold F. “Putt” Lowell and the late Charlotte E. (Marlow) Lowell. He attended school in Mendon as a young boy and was a graduate of Mendon High School, Class of 1943.
Chief Lowell was a lifelong resident of Mendon and had been employed in the family business, Lowell’s Dairy, for over thirty years. He was also employed at the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy in Stow MA, retiring in 1986 having been a Deputy Chief for over ten years. He had served the Mendon Fire Department for thirty years, serving as chief of the department for fourteen and a half years.
Chief Lowell was a lifetime member the International Assoc. of Fire Chiefs; the New England Assoc. of Fire Chiefs; the Fire Chiefs Assoc. of Massachusetts; the Blackstone Valley Forestry Assoc. of which he was a Past President; the Central Mass. Area Fire Chiefs; and had served many years on the Southern Worcester County Radio Committee and was a charter Director of the original Central Mass. Fire Academy. He was also a member of the Retired State and Municipal Employees Association.
Chief Lowell was a WW II US Navy Veteran having served in the Pacific theatre of the war at Okinawa and Iwo Jima from 1943 to 1946. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and was a member of the Lawrence J. Heron DAV Post, the Roger L. Wood American Legion Post and a life member of the USS LCI National Association Inc. in Sampson NY and was also a member of the Sampson WWII Navy Vets.
Chief Lowell was also a Past President of the New England Unit of Wally Byam Airstream Caravan Club, where he also served a number of years as a Trustee. He was a member of the Aleppo Shrine R.V. & Camping Club. Chief Lowell was also a member of the Solomon’s Temple A.F.A.M. and the Aleppo Temple Shrine; as well as a life member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, in the Valley of Boston.
Chief Lowell had also served as member of the Board of Directors of the Milford Federal Savings & Loan Association since 1974 and had served as a Vice President since 2005.
Along with his wife of sixty years, he is survived by 2 Sons: Louis Freeman Lowell and his wife Nancy of Ipswich MA, Linwood E. “Bud” Lowell Jr. and his wife Karen of Mendon MA; 2 Grandchildren: Christopher P. Lowell of Mendon MA and Kerry Ann Lowell of Ipswich MA; 1 Great Granddaughter: Hannah; 1 Sister: Berneta DeVries of Mendon MA; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Chief Lowell was the father of the late Charlotte Helen Lowell, who died in 1979.
Funeral Services, with Military Honors, will be held Tuesday (October 28th) at 11am in the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Mendon, 13 Maple Street, Mendon MA. Burial will follow in Swan Dale Cemetery in Mendon MA. Visiting hours will be Monday evening from 5pm to 8pm at the Edwards Memorial Funeral Home, 44 Congress Street, Milford MA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in memory of his late daughter, Charlotte H. Lowell, to The Ronald McDonald House, 229 Kent Street, Brookline MA 02146.
